Re-Purposed Yardstick Christmas Tree

November 16, 2012
I have been working on this project off and on this week, and it's finally done.

The project started with a wooden yardstick advertising Glidden Paint at Montgomery Ward.

I had my husband cut me 2", 3", 4", 5", 6", 7" and 8" lengths from the yardstick with a saw. The little inch piece left over became the trunk.

Holes were drilled in each piece at the top and bottom of each piece. I sanded and rounded the corners and edges. I stained the pieces provincial oak, and then covered them with a sparkle glaze.

You could use wire to join the pieces, but I tied them together with jute.

I added a metal, white snowflake to the top, and also a jute hang tie. The snowflake was cut off of a candle ring.

Here is the yardstick tree hanging below the fireplace mantel.

It was a very easy project.

I have all kinds of yardsticks I was collecting years ago for a project and now I can't remember what the project was. I love the tree and you did a really nice job..the sanding and glaze and all made it really stand out. Very nice!

  16. I have been saving up odd shutter slats to make a tree. Never even thought of my yardstick collection. I love this so much better than the shutter slats that I have to use it. Thank you for sharing a great idea. How unique!

  32. Love this idea Carlene. I have about 6 old yard sticks just sitting in a pile and don't know what to do with them. I kind of hate to cut them up but I love this idea. I've thought of using them as edging for 'something' but there they sit. lol

  34. How fun :0) Of course my maiden name is Montgomery so I think it is extra special with my name right in the middle!

Merry Christmas, thanks for sharing this cute idea :0)

  35. I am old enough to remember shopping at "monkeys"as we used to call it. Also appropriate for the holiday. With all the glitter we sometimes forget that the Lord was a carpenter. It would be a nice conversation piece in my home. There is always a use for things it just takes a clever person to bring it on!
