Decorating a Very Small Bathroom

March 26, 2013
I often wonder why my 3/4 bath was designed to be soooooo small.  Just a couple extra feet would have made such a big difference.

After thinking about the hangers I had found in my garage, I decided to hang them in my small bathroom.

I've had an "outhouse" theme going on in there, mostly because the place is the size of an outhouse.  Framed black and white photos of the outhouses near the hunting cabins of our friends and relatives, previously decorated the walls.    The enamelware that was already in the bathroom seemed to go well with the hangers.  At least they were from the same era.

I also hung this vintage printer's tray in the bathroom.  I scrambled for a few smalls to display in the cubbies, but settled for now with the iron stars.  I just purchased the tray for $24 at an antique shop.  It has a Hamilton drawer pull.

This small bathroom redo was not without problems.  First I dropped my black Baby Ben clock and broke the glass over the face, and also dropped a hammer on my toe.  I hate being clumsy!

The rustic black mirror was already hanging over the toilet, so I just added a couple more hangers and a camp or wood stove griddle.

A little twig chair hold extra toilet paper.

The glass shelf that used to hold toothbrushes when children were home is no longer used much so I put a vintage Tonka truck on top filled with my husband's favorite soap, Irish Spring.  I hate the smell of it.

I have a black ticking valance on the window.

I think one of my next projects will be painting this old vanity...

  7. I love the vintage conversation pieces on the walls! Maybe you could substitute Palmolive for the Irish Spring and compromise on the smell, smile, it's still green!

  10. You've done a great job decorating your bathroom, Carlene. What is it with home designers anyway?? My powder room is so small you can hardly turn around in it. Hardly any place for extra toilet paper!

  22. Great inspiration Carlene, when it comes time for me to tackle the small powder room! First I need to decide on a paint color. Always the hardest for me.

  23. I have one of those small bathrooms too and I have to blame myself because I designed it. If you use our mudroom bathroom and don't lock the door, be prepared for someone to open in fast and whack 'ya in the knees.

  29. So sorry about the baby with no face anymore. :( Your hangers look perfect on that wall! I can't wait to see what you fill your printer's tray with. I know you'll find something on your thrifty lunch breaks.

hint. Don't use oil based paint on the vanity. If it's white, it will yellow right away and touch ups stick out like a sore thumb. Been there, done that.
